The Aloha Spirit
A solo trip through Hawaiian Islands
With just 2 backpacks, Christy took off on another solo adventure to Hawaii.
Having been there before she already has a love and appreciation for the culture
and land. This trip was different, one of soul searching and clarity. She says: "I really
try and embody the Aloha spirit." "The Aloha spirit?" I asked since I've never been
to Hawaii and honestly never had a real desire to go. She went on to explain,
"Hawaii is more than Mai Tais on the beach. We can do that in Miami for far less
money. The Aloha spirit is a cluster of enlightenment, protection, unity and peace.
Finding balance, family, culture and respect. It's how they treat one another."
Now my interest was peaked. Christy was on her adventure for four weeks to four
islands stating each is it's own unique and special experience. Maui is more
commercialized and where tourism is high. Molokai was quite the opposite. Tourism is discouraged here (see photo below). Molokai is all about the land and "I really had to earn the trust of the locals." She says, "the locals are all about their land and history, culture. It is a very small island where everyone knows everyone. Lanai was an even smaller island. "There is not tourist type shops, bars etc. and you have to have an off road vehicle. "Oahu is my favorite island." she states with such excitement. "It's the first island I ever went to, a place not over saturated with tourism but still welcoming and can feel at peace." she goes on to explain. It is also where you can find the stairway to heaven.
How she got around: "I took either a ferry or a small charter plane to get between islands. While on the islands I rented vehicles from local shops. I highly recommend doing it that way. Not only are you helping small businesses but they charge a flat rate with no hidden fees."
Safety: "I felt safe while traveling alone. Don't get me wrong, Hawaii still has crime like everywhere else. It is widely known that cars get broken into. Car parts, belongings and the car itself could be taken."
Last thoughts: "Hawaii is a trip to connect to nature, the universe. To meditate and find yourself.
My thoughts: I want to thank Christy for agreeing to share her journey and for being my first of many interviews (fingers crossed). I also thought it important to mention Christy is happily married. Many people think if you travel solo or to be a solo traveler you have to be single. That is definitely not the case! Solo travel brings so many benefits and with a supportive mate you still can experience the joys. Personally, I'm not a beach person and when people talk about Hawaii its normally the beach. After this interview Hawaii is definitely on my bucket list! What about you?
